As we celebrate Earth Day, it is crucial to recognise the vital role forests play in sustaining life in our country and on our planet. Forests are not just a collection of trees; they are dynamic ecosystems that regulate climate, support biodiversity, and provide resources essential for human survival.

Forests are a remarkably economical and accessible mechanism for climate regulation. Next to oceans, forests are the world’s second-largest carbon sinks, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by storing an estimated 296 gigatonnes of carbon in biomass (UNECE/FAO).
Air Quality Control
Forests are natural purifiers that require little to no maintenance. They improve air quality by filtering harmful pollutants from the atmosphere. Forests are also natural coolers, capable of cooling the air by as much as 8 degrees, reducing the need for air conditioners and consequently saving thousands of dollars on utility bills.
Live-giving Force
Jamaica's diverse forests are crucial for maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance. Biodiversity is vital to food security among people and animals, and provides resources for medicine, among other needs.
Water is life—forest watersheds channel water, supplying hundreds of communities daily.
Economic Wellspring
Forests also play a significant role in Jamaica's economy. They provide resources such as timber and food, securing livelihoods that fuel local economies.
Protecting our Power
Jamaica's forests face threats from deforestation and degradation, so we need everyone to get on board and use their resources responsibly. The Forestry Department promotes sustainable forest management practices, including tree planting and maintenance, sustainable harvesting of trees and legal ways to access forest resources to ensure that our forests’ ecosystem services are available for future generations.
