The Forestry Department was thrilled to support Hampton School’s “Restoration Day”, aiding in the planting of sixty-five trees after Hurricane Beryl devastated the compound.

On 22 August 2024, Forestry Department representatives, Hampton High students and staff, and parents teamed up to plant assorted ornamental trees across the school grounds on the restoration work day. The tree-planting activity was done to improve the school’s resilience to natural disasters, including hurricanes, beautify the premises, enhance its green spaces, increase biodiversity, and enrich the students' learning experience.

Dr. Mahvell Charlton-Brown, principal of the Hampton School, commented, “Our ladies appreciate being in the outdoors—at break, at study… The shade trees near their benches and their seating areas will really help to make an amenable—a pleasant atmosphere. We are most appreciative of that contribution.”

Over time, the trees will contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment for students, staff and the entire community.

Ms. Tamara Nicholson, Principal Director of Forest Operations (Acting) at the Forestry Department, said,  “Our commitment marks a significant step towards fostering environmental stewardship within the community and a hands-on educational opportunity for community members and students to learn about the importance of trees and their role in the ecosystem.”

The students will be able to monitor the growth of the trees and study their impact on the local ecosystem. They will also be first-hand witnesses of trees beautifying the school grounds and be able to teach the next generation about the importance of environmental conservation.

This partnership between the Forestry Department and Hampton School underscores the critical role of community collaboration in promoting environmental sustainability. Together, we will create a lasting positive impact on the environment and inspire future generations to appreciate the value of trees.
